Chapter 32
Despite the late night, Robyn woke at seven. She watched Christina sleeping, and desire for her surged, but she put temptation aside. Let her sleep a while longer. Robyn slipped on shorts and a T-shirt and padded into the kitchen to brew the coffee. When there was enough for her to pour a mugful, she strolled onto the patio, taking a deep breath of lilac in the cool morning air. There would be turmoil ahead, but now she just wanted to enjoy the present.
A mourning dove called to her mate. Images of their evening flashed through Robynâs mind as she finished her coffee. She stretched luxuriously and marveled at how life could suddenly become so vibrant, regardless of age. Indulging in memories of sensual pleasures occupied her until she rose to prepare breakfast.
She glanced at her phone on the counter and picked it up. Rob would wonder where she was. I donât bother him when heâs off at his weekend conferences and goes into radio silence. Instead of calling, she returned to her playlist. The perfect song appeared, and she put her in her earbuds so she didnât disturb Christina.
Robyn was washing vegetables at the kitchen sink, singing softly along with Tina Turnerâs âThe Bestâ when Christinaâs arms wrapped around her waist.
âAre you singing to me, honey?â Christina whispered in her ear. Robyn put down the mushrooms, took out her earbuds, and turned to melt into Christinaâs body for a long, passionate kiss.
Robyn whispered in Christinaâs ear, âThe next song up is âYouâre So Vain.ââ They both laughed as Robyn kissed her again.
Robyn pulled back, smiling. âIâm making breakfast. We need to keep up our strength. Grab some coffee.â
âBy the way, darling, you look gorgeous this morning,â said Christina.
Robyn looked down at her clothes. âYouâre kidding, right?â
âNot at all. I love seeing you look comfortable.â
âWell, I confess. Over the last few weeks, every time I was meeting you, I spent way too much time sorting through outfits and changing my makeup. Itâs a residual girl thing.â
âThis is my favorite outfit apart from the one last night in the bedroom.â
Robyn smiled and returned to her cooking. She sauteed chopped mushrooms, peppers, zucchini, and chorizo sausage before adding egg whites from a carton and two fresh eggs into the pan. She scrambled the mixture and added Boursin cheese.
âCan you hand me a couple of plates, sweetheart?â
Christina took both plates to the table. She glanced around for the silverware drawer and found it after two tries.
âYouâll have to learn your way around here,â Robyn said, winking at her.
They ate breakfast in companionable silence for a few moments. Robyn remembered Christina hadnât invited her to her condo yet. She assumed it was out of deference to the memory of Renée, but they would cross that barrier eventually. Just as sheâd have to speak to her husband. She winced. But not today.
As if Rob had gotten the message telepathically, he phoned.
Robyn decided sheâd better answer. No sooner had they said hello than Rob demanded, âWhere were you last night? You didnât answer when I called.
